MEDICAL APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM, WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

What it is: The Medical Apprenticeship Program provides full-time, paid, on-the-job training for high school graduates to earn national credentials as medical assistants or medical administrators, with participants counted as full-time Wash U employees from the first day. Participants spend four hours each week in the classroom and the other 36 in a clinic for 16 weeks, and after passing an exam, receive a pay raise and finish the remainder of the 1.5 year program in the clinic.

HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL
Address: 1 St. Elizabeth’s Blvd., O’Fallon, Illinois
What it is: Hospital Sisters Health Systems offers a few health care training services. The first is a paid certified nurse assistant (CNA) program, in partnership with St. Clair County and Midwest Career Source. They also offer high school health care boot camps that enable students to gain a realistic look into health care roles and make professional connections. HSHS also offers the REACH upfront tuition program for current employees, covering up to $4,000 annually in tuition, including more than 1,000 courses toward clinical certificates and college and high school degrees.

GOLDFARB SCHOOL OF NURSING, BARNES-JEWISH COLLEGE

What it is: Full-Ride Tuition Scholars Program for incoming nursing students, in exchange for three years of working for BJC HealthCare after graduation.

What it is: A health care intermediary that works with major hospital partners to eliminate health care disparities by improving the quality, accessibility and affordability of health care for St. Louis’ most vulnerable and underserved citizens

SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY AREA HEALTH EDUCATION CENTERS

What it is: The program, which the university runs in affiliation with the Missouri Health Education Center, is part of a nationwide network that focuses on recruiting underrepresented minorities to health profession schools, encouraging and supporting completion of those schools by underrepresented minorities, encouraging careers in primary care and improving the retention of health professionals in underserved areas.

PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN TRAINING, ST. LOUIS COMMUNITY COLLEGE

What it is: The program is a partnership between STLCC, BJC and SSM Health hospitals. It involves an 11-week accelerated training program that combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training.

STL.WORKS

What it is: The program, a workforce development initiative created by the Regional Business Council, is an all-in-one resource for those looking to train for, start or progress in a career, including jobs that don’t require a degree. Special focus on health care, technology, manufacturing and the trades.

SKILLUP PROGRAM, JEFFERSON COLLEGE

What it is: This state program offers free tuition and support services to individuals receiving food stamp benefits. It is offered at all of Missouri’s community colleges. Jefferson College offers programs for CNAs, certified medication technicians, medical assistants, pharmacy technicians and patient care technicians.

ST. LOUIS CENTERS FOR ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL STUDIES (CAPS)

What it is: The St. Louis CAPS Medicine, Health Care and Bioscience Course provides high school students access to real world experiences in health care. As part of the course, students can complete a capstone course’s requirements, complete an internship and/or earn college credit.

HEARTLAND CENTER FOR POPULATION HEALTH AND COMMUNITY SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT

What it is: The Heartland Center at Saint Louis University works with academic and practice partners locally and nationally to support a systemic approach to workforce development. It offers more than 500 online modules, programs, toolkits and resources that meet quality standards. It’s part of a national network of 10 training centers funded by the Health Resources Services Administration.

SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT OF ST. LOUIS COUNTY HEALTH SCIENCES PROGRAM

What it is: SSD’s Health Sciences program, offered at South Tech and North County Technical High School, allows students to enroll in lab and course work their junior and senior years of high school and experience clinical rotations at area hospitals and assisted living facilities.
